Unroll it. How do you prepare the ground before rolling out gGRASS?

Good soil preparation will yield a high return, therefore, you need to take time to properly prepare and level the subsoil so that a beautiful lawn will be established that is healthy and easier to maintain. Before leveling the area, the minimum depth of soil to dig over is 10 cm (4 inches); standard is 15 cm (6 inches). This top soil needs to be compacted with a lawn roller (one third full of water) to firm and settle the surface. Do not compact it too much, otherwise it will undermine root growth & water drainage. Remove stumps, rocks, stones or other debris.

This preparation is, by the way, exactly the same as other ways to establish a lawn.

Unroll it. How do you fix & shape the gGRASS rolls?

Before rolling out the grass mats, water the area so that the soil settles , the rolls adhere better to the soil surface and a moisture bed is created to guarantee strong root growth.
The professional way to fix the rolls is using stakes or (biodegradable) pins; in practice, bricks or rocks are often placed on the edges. More practical advice is, just after unrolling, to shovel the right amount of topsoil onto the seedbed which will then be used as top dressing at a later stage.
The grass seed on rolls can be shaped easily by cutting the seed rolls with ordinary household scissors.

Cover it. How do you top-dress the gGRASS rolls properly?

For small gardens the back of a plastic leaf rake or a garden brush works fine to cover the rolls of seed; for larger areas professional landscaping equipment like a leveling rake are a great help. This topdressing of the seed rolls needs to fully cover the seed rolls with a thickness layer between 0,5 – 1 cm (= ¼ to 1/2 inch)

Cover it. What type of soil do you use for covering gGRASS rolls?

Any soil mix of sand, clay & compost will do the job but be aware that sand has no nutrients and also that it holds no water. Fine sand will easily erode due to rainfall or wind. Ideally a mix containing 30% organic compost, or your average top soil from a garden center, will do a great job. Often left over soil is used for preparing the lawn area.

Water it. How often do you need to water the planted area?

A starting lawn must be kept moist for at least one week. Allowing the soil to dry out during this critical germination phase can result in seedling death. Water lightly 2 – 3 times a day for the first 1 – 2 weeks. After that, you will still need to keep the seedlings watered on a regular basis; less frequently but a little deeper. Do not soak the soil or you could encourage root rot disease.

Watch it. When do you mow for the first time?

Do not mow too soon after the grass blades start to show. You need to wait until the grass blades reach at least 10 cm (4 inches). Mowing the lawn is important because it will force the grass plant to grow 3 dimensionally which creates a thick lawn.

When can you walk on the grass?

Keep foot traffic off the planted area as much as possible for at least a couple of weeks after germination has started. Timing to allow foot traffic is in line with the first time the lawn needs to be mown.

Which raw materials are used around the seed in the grass mat?

The backing layer is based on entangled cellulose wood fibers. The coating-polymer is a potato-starch. The mineral fillers and growth-stimulants in the coating are all bio-based and environmentally-friendly.

Do you need to use fertilizers & herbicides?

Provided the subsoil holds enough nutrients it is not necessary to use a fertilizer. The number one enemy for newly seeded lawns are herbicides. Weed control is provided by the backing layer of the mat and the quick establishment of a dense lawn that naturally crowds out weeds.

How long will it take for the materials to biodegrade?

This depends on quite some variables: soil mix type, temperature, moisture & micro-organism level. On average it takes 8 weeks which is enough time to give grass a head start to competing weeds.

How long can you keep gGRASS rolls in stock?

As with normal grass seeds for at least one year; provided, of course, you store the product in a dry and cool area. The seeds that we supply are fresh, high quality seeds that guarantee a high germination level over time.

Do you also have products with other type of grass seeds? Other seeds than grass?

Not yet commercially but we are working on various prototypes; other grass varieties, wildflowers, herbs and all kinds of vegetables.

Do you ship worldwide?

Yes we do, except to countries that do not allow import of foreign seeds. Examples are Australia & New Zealand.
